Submission Guidelines

Thank you for agreeing to contribute an article to HigherEdRisk. We are excited to work with you and believe your expertise will provide valuable insights to our readers. This letter outlines our expectations and guidelines to ensure a smooth and collaborative process.

Important Dates

  • First draft due depends on issue: 

    • Winter - Mid November

    • Summer - Mid March

    • Fall - Mid July

  • Expected publication:  Within 60 days of final draft

  • Promotion period: within 30 days of publication date.

Content Requirements

  • Word count: 1000 words or less, with a minimum of 850 words

  • Deadline: Depends on edition

    • Winter - 2nd week of November

    • Summer - 3rd week of March

    • Fall - 2nd week of July

  • Topic focus: To be discussed with Editor-in-Chief

  • Target audience: Executives, Boards of Trustees/Regents, and Fiduciaries

  • All submissions must be your original content and not previously published elsewhere 

  • Minimize the use of AI text in your article

  • Authors shall verify facts and evaluate for bias

What do you want to talk about?

Technical Requirements

  • Format: Microsoft Word (.doc/.docx) or Google Docs

  • Preferred Font: Avenir Next, 12-point

  • Spacing: Single

  • Citations: Provide website links to any referenced articles and/or footnotes

Style Guidelines

  • Write in a clear and engaging voice

  • Title should not be more than 6 words

  • Include statistics and examples from case studies, where applicable, to increase the impact of your article. The goal is to provide actionable takeaways

  • Break up text with subheadings, bullet points, and short paragraphs

  • Style: Smart Brevity (similar to AXIOS)

  • Avoid technical jargon 

  • Include a brief bio (less than 75 words) and include a high resolution headshot. If you can share this in advance of the submission date it would be ideal.

Editorial Process

  1. Initial Submission

    • Submit your first draft by the agreed deadline

    • Include all necessary images, charts, or graphics

    • Provide links to sources and references

  2. Review Process

    • Our editorial team will review within 5 business days

    • You'll receive feedback and revision requests, if needed

    • Please return revisions within 3 business days

  3. Final Approval

    • You'll receive a final version for approval before publication

    • Please confirm approval within 48 hours

    • We reserve the right to make minor editorial adjustments

    • All graphics are at the discretion of the Creative Director and Editor-in-Chief

Promotion Guidelines

We encourage you to share your published article across your networks. Please:

  • Wait until the article is published before sharing

  • Link directly to the published article

  • Tag our social media account: HigherEdRisk

  • Use our suggested hashtags in the post to increase visibility and engagement: #higheredrisk, #riskmanagement, #highereducation

Compensation and Rights

  • There is no compensation. The magazine is free to subscribers

  • The Author hereby grants to the Publisher the following rights: a) The exclusive right to publish, reproduce, and distribute the Article in any format, including but not limited to print, electronic, and digital formats; b) The right to edit, modify, or otherwise alter the Article for publication; c) The right to use the Author's name and likeness in connection with the publication and promotion of the Article.

Warranties

The Author warrants and represents that: a) The Article is the Author's original work b) The Article has not been previously published elsewhere; c) The Article does not infringe upon any copyright or other proprietary rights; d) The Article contains no material that is libelous, defamatory, or otherwise unlawful.

Release

The Author hereby releases and forever discharges HigherEdRisk its owners, agents, employees, affiliates, representatives, consultants, boards, and assigns from any and all claims, damages, or liabilities arising from the publication of the Work, including but not limited to claims of a) defamation, b) copyright infringement, c) breach of confidentiality, and d) invasion of privacy.
