Deidre Melton is the Associate Vice President for Enterprise Risk Management and Deputy Chief Operating Officer at Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University, where she leads university-wide efforts to identify, assess, and mitigate strategic and operational risks. With a background spanning internal audit, IT security, and organizational resilience, Deidre specializes in transforming risk into opportunity through innovative strategies that align with institutional goals, ensuring that universities can thrive amid change and uncertainty.
Hazel Mak is Head of Enterprise Resilience, Research, Intelligence & Strategy at the Office of Risk Management and Compliance (ORMC), National University of Singapore (NUS). In her role, she manages risk intelligence, horizon scanning, strategic risk management, and risk awareness and culture. With over 15 years in higher education, Hazel previously led initiatives in strategic planning, quality assurance, and organizational excellence. She is dedicated to driving impactful risk management and fostering resilience for institutional excellence.
Han He is a Senior Manager in the Office of Risk Management and Compliance at the National University of Singapore, with nearly 9 years of audit and risk management experience spanning the resource, transportation, utility, and education sectors. As a CFA, FRM, and ACCA holder, she drives proactive risk sensing, scenario planning, and research intelligence, integrating data and foresight to enhance risk management, resilience, and strategic decision-making in alignment with institutional goals.
Muhammad Zhafri Bin Azman is an Assistant Manager at the National University of Singapore Office of Risk Management and Compliance. In his role, Zhafri conducts research on the current and emerging risks affecting universities. Driven by a deep interest in risk management and the higher education industry, Zhafri strives to combine analytical skills with a strong sense of social responsibility to support safer, more resilient educational environments.
Bill Raab, Senior Director, ERM & Compliance at Huron Consulting Group, has over 20 years of experience in the risk management and insurance fields, holding executive roles with insurance carriers and a large university. Throughout his career, Bill has worked with a wide range of businesses, helping them implement enterprise risk management programs, improve operational efficiencies, and enhance decision-making. Bill also holds a doctorate in organizational leadership, which allows him to effectively marry leadership principles with ERM processes.
Jacob Sajinyan is an accomplished risk management leader with over a decade of experience in treasury, finance, insurance, and enterprise risk at Research 1 universities. A Certified Property Casualty Underwriter (CPCU), Associate in Risk Management (ARM), and a Certified Treasury Professional (CTP) holder, Jacob specializes in strategic risk program development and policy implementation, and he leads complex cross-departmental projects in higher education. He currently serves as the chair of the University Risk & Insurance Management Associations (URMIA) Finance Committee, bringing over four years of volunteer leadership experience. His work focuses on building practical, mission-aligned risk strategies that strengthen institutional resilience.
John Iannarelli served 20 years as an FBI special agent, investigating 9/11, the shooting of Congressman Giffords, the Oklahoma City bombing, and the Sony hack. He served as the FBI’s National Spokesperson on the Cyber Division Executive Staff and was an Assistant Special Agent in Charge, overseeing all criminal, cyber, and counterintelligence investigations. He was recognized with the FBI’s Director Award for Distinguished Service. A former police officer and attorney, John later worked NFL security, earning two Super Bowl rings for his work with the Kansas City Chiefs. As a frequent on-air contributor to national news media and the author of five books, John is a sought-after keynote speaker who has presented to Fortune 500 companies, the United Nations, and the Vatican.
Bradley Dlatt has contributed to more than $100 million in insurance recoveries for policyholders nationwide. Bradley also regularly advises policyholders on complex coverage issues, including policy placements and renewals. He has experience with every major line of commercial insurance, including property and business interruption, representations and warranties (RWI), cyber, general liability (CGL), directors and officers (D&O), employment practices (EPLI), and errors & omissions (E&O).
A tireless advocate for student success, Dr. Virginia Koch has worked on college campuses for nearly 40 years. She currently teaches leadership studies at the University of Central Florida. She is founder and CEO of Knots Untied Coaching, providing faith-based life and leadership coaching. Virginia holds a PhD in higher education from Loyola University Chicago, a master’s degree from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and a bachelor’s degree from the University of Akron. Rob Budach is currently the Vice President for Administrative Services and CFO of Mesa Community College. Rob’s background and career have been in both student affairs and auxiliary services through student housing and dining. Rob’s experience comes from a 15-year career at Arizona State University Housing where he served as Senior Director of Finance managing an auxiliary portfolio of over 16,000 beds, a majority of which are third-party owned. Rob holds an MBA from ASU, a PMP Certification, and is a Certified Auxiliary Services Professional (CASP) through NACAS.
Dr. Norean R. Sharpe served as Dean and Joseph and Maria Schwartz Distinguished Chair evolved, the scope of our discussion has naturally expanded to include emerging risks, such as at St. John’s University’s Peter J. Tobin College of political activism, athletic funding, public confidence, and generative artificial intelligence (AI). Business from 2016-2023. She currently directs the M.S. in Business Analytics Program and serves as professor. Previously, she was Senior Associate Dean at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business and Professor of Statistics at Babson College. Dr. Sharpe is co-author (w/ P. Walker and N. Hubbard) of the chapter on “Enterprise Risk Management in Business Education” in the recent book The Future of Business Schools, Edward Elgar Publishing, 2022. The 13th Symposium on Risk Management in Higher Education, co-hosted by Deloitte and St. John’s University, was held on April 4, 2025. This symposium once again gathered a diverse set of leaders–CROs, CCOs, trustees, deans, provosts, and presidents–to tackle the pressing risk-related challenges facing higher education today. The focus of this year’s symposium was on prominent risk issues, such as evaluating the cost and effectiveness of institutional insurance and mitigating academic leadership risk. Here, I share some of the insights from the panel of academic deans discussing Deans as Risk Owners: How Can Deans Prepare for Our Evolving Educational Landscape. She is also co-author of the textbook Business Statistics (w/ R. De Veaux and P. Velleman), Pearson Education. Dr. Sharpe served as an honorary committee member of the American Women for International Understanding (AWIU) and, in 2017, was elected as a member of the Women’s Forum of New York. She holds degrees from Mount Holyoke College, University of North Carolina, and University of Virginia.
